>Girl bitches about all of the cultural appropriation on Tumblr
>Gets told off because she likes Thor, which is basically one giant appropriation of Heathenism, one of the more marginalized groups basically anywhere
>Gets told some Heathens are uncomfortable…
L O L I checked the asatru tag for OP’s friends:
So why don’t you check YOUR non-heathen privilege?
File under things I will never understand.
I’ll never get over the people in the Heathen community who think that Marvel is committing some kind of sacrilege. Especially considering that they’ve been publishing these comics since the 60s. And especially when they swoon every time Neil Gaiman writes Odin’s name down on a piece of paper. And especially when you compare them! Marvel’s Odin is a complex and dichotomous figure. Gaiman’s Odin is just a pervy old cheat. Where was the Internet outrage in response to American Gods? Why weren’t the Heathens kicking his doorstep down? They know he’s Jewish, right?
Heathens are “one of the more marginalized groups basically anywhere”? Really? Anywhere? She might want to compare Heathenry’s position in this world to other polytheist groups. Vikings and the ancient Norse are constantly lionized in popular culture. What other polytheist group can say that about themselves? How many horror movies are there about Heathens? Try being a Vodouisant. African Traditional Religions are constantly portrayed as Satanic and malevolent, and that is a deep-seated cultural misconception that results in real obstacles to worship. American Heathens are free to practice religious sacrifice today because of conflicts that practitioners of Santeria had with the law. And let’s not forget our First Nations friends…no Heathen anywhere would want to be in the position of a Native American citizen trying to maintain her traditional religion in the face of systematic oppression and actual marginalization - y’know, the kind where academia thinks your culture is valueless and not worth studying, or the kind where reactionaries try to make it illegal to speak your own language or to learn about your own culture in school, or the kind where you have no legal recourse to advocate for your community. Especially outside of this country. Nobody is murdering your religious leaders in their homes, thank goodness.
If you really feel that you’ve been disenfranchised by a violent conversion that happened a thousand years ago, wouldn’t you then feel empathy - solidarity, even - with communities who suffered violent conversions just a century ago? If you really felt that your religious traditions were being disrespected, wouldn’t that motivate you to be respectful of the vulnerable religious traditions that other cultures are trying to protect from real and immediate harm? Western scholars have made ongoing and enthusiastic efforts to preserve and increase our knowledge of Germanic history and pre-history, so that this woman can study her religion. Very few cultures have enjoyed that privilege. Oh look…there’s that word.

P. Sufenas, pagan professor and blogger, is offering a number of correspondence courses that would be of interest to some of my followers. Subjects include queer theology, syncretism and Reconstructionism, the cult of Antinous, Irish paganism, lycanthropic spirituality(!) and others. I can say that I’ve personally learned a lot from this guy, and an education from him is worth every penny. Registration for the first term has been extended to this Thursday.
Thanks. :) I hadn’t heard of him before now, but I see that he’s a traditional witchcraft practitioner who’s had multiple interviews with Karagan Griffith.

I like his accent. He seems to be predicting quakes and tsunamis, though…
